Grill Safety Tips: How to Keep Your BBQ Safe and Fire-Free

Summer is synonymous with outdoor barbecues and grilling. While cooking outdoors is a great way to enjoy the weather with family and friends, it's important to remember that grills present a significant fire hazard if not used correctly. Follow these essential grill safety tips to keep your BBQ safe and fire-free.
1. Grill Outside and Away from Structures
Never use a grill indoors, in a garage, or under an enclosed patio. Grills should only be used outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and any overhanging branches. This safe distance helps prevent accidental fires from spreading to structures.
2. Keep Your Grill Clean
Grease buildup is a leading cause of grill fires. Clean the grates and the trays below the grill regularly. Removing grease and fat buildup not only improves the taste of your food but also significantly reduces the risk of a flare-up that could turn into a dangerous fire.
3. Check for Gas Leaks
If you use a propane grill, check the gas cylinder hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. If you see bubbles forming when you turn on the gas, there is a leak. Turn off the gas immediately and have the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
4. Never Leave a Lit Grill Unattended
Fires can double in size in just a minute. Never leave a lit grill unattended, even for a moment. Keep a close eye on the grill while cooking, and ensure that children and pets stay at least three feet away from the grilling area at all times.
5. Be Prepared to Extinguish a Fire
Always have a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it. If you don't have a fire extinguisher, keep a bucket of sand or a garden hose ready. Remember, never use water to put out a grease fire, as it can cause the hot grease to splatter and spread the fire. Use baking soda or sand instead.
